24 April 2017: Some workshops and fitment centres also lack the necessary expertise, which only adds to breakdown costs. Consumers should identify a reliant workshop, and build a trustworthy relationship. “These days the first thing that comes to mind when one has to service and maintain a vehicle is the cost. It seems that the service interval always comes at the time of the month where one should decide whether the money should be spent on the vehicle, or some other necessity for the family,” comments Albertus Steyn, Senior Technical Advisor, Federal-Mogul Motorparts.

“What one forgets is that this vehicle is a very important part of one’s day-to-day operation, and how reliant one is on transportation. This vehicle does not only get you to work and back in time, but also assists in getting your children to school safely. If it breaks down due to lack of maintenance, one only appreciates its value that much more,” Steyn elaborates. Servicing and maintaining a vehicle not only ensures that the vehicle remains roadworthy, but that its value remains as high as possible. Thus the engine and drive train need to be serviced regularly by draining and replacing lubricants and filters where applicable.

This guarantees that the deposits entrapped in the filters over a prolonged service interval are removed from the engine. The lubricant is not only a source of lubricating dynamic components, but also assists with heat dissipation from internal components during operation. Oil degrades and loses its protective properties over time. “One should note that part of a service is to inspect safety-critical systems of the vehicle, and ensure that they are in a working condition. The entire braking system, for instance, must be inspected, and not only the set of brake pads that one normally sees as being the only replacement component,” Steyn warns.

Regular visual inspection of the condition of tyres, windscreen wipers, and brake-fluid levels can be conducted easily by vehicle owners themselves. This will prevent breakdown maintenance that might cost more compared to preventative maintenance. Ferodo offers brake pads as well as replacement brake rotors, hydraulic components, and top-quality brake fluid. The Champion range offers replacement air, fuel, and oil filters, and wiper blades for 90% of the vehicle park in South Africa.

As a distributor of well-known brands such as Ferodo and Champion, Federal-Mogul has dedicated research-and-development centres globally. These centres assist the brands with innovative new products, and ensure that consumers receive top-quality components at highly-competitive prices. For example, Ferodo has launched its new Eco friction project, in line with the latest legislation on friction manufacturing, whereby all friction components are manufactured with no heavy metals in their formulations. This means top performance under operating conditions, and extended life expectancy of braking components. Ferodo also recently launched replacement brake drums onto the South African market.

Federal-Mogul offers technical advice to direct and indirect customers as part of its aftersales service. The technical department assists consumers with technical information and expertise that, in some cases, results in rectifying problematic braking systems at the technical centre in City West, Johannesburg. Steyn adds that international legislation is much stricter compared to South Africa. “Emissions control and regular roadworthy certification compel international drivers to maintain their vehicles better. This translates into limited breakdowns, improved traffic flow and, ultimately, better road safety.”

Steyn concludes: “Federal-Mogul will continue to introduce leading technology to the aftermarket to support consumers. Carrying out preventative maintenance reduces breakdown maintenance. By looking after your vehicle and maintaining it regularly with good-quality brands is one way of looking after the safety of your family and other road users.”
